History:
Urbino is a municipality in the province of Pesaro and Urbino in the Marche region of central Italy. Capital of the princes della Rovere, the city established itself as a major military and scientific center in Renaissance Italy, with such personalities as Piero della Francesca, Commandino, Bernardino Baldi or Guidobaldo Del Monte. It is also nicknamed "the Athens of Italy". Of Celtic origin and march, the ancient Roman municipality of Urvinum Mataurense and the surrounding lands became in the twelfth century the possession of the lords of Montefeltre, before passing into the hands of Della Rovere in the sixteenth century. Capital of the Duchy of Urbino, the city became known during the reign of Duke Frederick III of Montefeltro (1444-1482). The court is brilliant at the Renaissance: the painter Piero della Francesca was the flower. The city center developed around the civic square, most certainly located where the Roman forum was in ancient times. To the north, the cathedral was erected in the twelfth century by the commune. The palaces of the podestat and the priests were built on both sides. Guidantonio da Montefeltro, count of Urbino from 1404 to 1443 and whose family already had a loggia, built the palazetto della Jole in front of the palace of the Podestat. From 1440, the lords of the city patiently invested the civic center of the city until the time when Frederick III of Montefeltro built his residence in support of the medieval wall to the west of the city, even though it was to be extend to the old civic square. However, the ducal palace encloses the place on two sides, the civic space is now the antechamber of the prince’s dwelling. To signify to the city that she now lives under her control, Frederick III edged the sumptuous porticoes around 1470 and moved the market place at the foot of the steep facade of the castle. To the extinction of the princes della Rovere, the duchy and its capital were incorporated into the papal states in 1631.
