History:
Sarai, also transliterated Saray ("palace" in Turkish), his full name being Sarai Batu (Batu’s palace) was the capital of the khans of the Golden Horde, land of Tatars, after its foundation by Batu, grandson from Genghis Khan, circa 1240. It was located on the Volga Low, near Volgograd, on the territory of present-day Syelitryennoye in present-day Astrakhan Oblast. A second city called Sarai Berke (or novoi Sarai, meaning new Sarai) was established further northwest, still along the Volga by Berke in 1261.
