History:
The area known as the Taipei Basin was inhabited by the Ketagalan, one of Taiwan’s aboriginal people, before the 18th century. The Hans, mainly from the Chinese province of Fujian, settled there in 1709. At the end of the 19th century, the region of Taipei, populated by Hans and endowed with one of the main ports of Taiwan, Tamsui, took on economic importance. major thanks to international trade, particularly in the field of tea exports. As settlement for losing the Sino-Japanese War, China ceded the entire island of Taiwan to Japan in 1895. Upon the Japanese defeat in the Pacific War and its consequent surrender in August 1945, Taiwan was taken over by Chinese Nationalist troops. On December 7, 1949, the Kuomintang government under Chiang Kai-shek established Taipei as the provisional capital of the ROC after the Communists forced them to flee mainland China. However, the PRC does not recognize this move and still regards Taipei as the provincial capital of Taiwan.
