Description:

"Fly to Serve"

DESCRIPTION:

– In the early 50’s POAC issued a design requirement for a new high speed airliner to all major manufacturers hoping to cash in on advancements in jet technology. However, the Westland company and their 990 (A jet variant of the aging 660) struggled to get meaningful performace improvements out of the early iterations of jet engines. Avro, meanwhile was already developing the C-188 for the Newquay Armed Forces, a new turboprop transport aircraft. The company had the Stratton Jupiter turboprops re-worked to produce almost 4,000 HP each. In addition the new aircraft which would become the Atlantic received a new nose, wings, tail, and landing gear.
The final result was the Avro 709 Atlantic, a high speed turboprop which traded capacity for sheer speed.
