History:
The Serene Republic of San Marino is a European microstate landlocked within Italy. It is the third smallest state in Europe after the Vatican and Monaco. It is also the oldest republic in the world in continuous existence until today, with a constitutional system dating back to the 16th century. The definitive establishment of the community of San Marino is symbolized by the death of its founder in the fall of AD 366, and especially by his last words: "Relinquo vos liberos ab utroque homine. ("I leave you free from other men"). By the year 1200, the continual increase in population had finally made territorial expansion necessary. The purchase of neighboring castles and their outbuildings was carried out twice. Over the centuries, many families tried to claim this territory but without success. When from 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte ensured his domination throughout Italy by founding several satellite states (Roman Republic in Rome, Parthenopean Republic in Naples, etc.), San Marino hastened to conclude agreements commercial with these new political entities, thus demonstrating his alliance with Bonaparte. Throughout the period known as the Risorgimento, during which revolutionary movements multiplied in Italy, San Marino served as a land of asylum for many exiles. As early as 1862, a treaty of friendship and cooperation was concluded between San Marino and the new Kingdom of Italy, the two states being considered on an equal footing.
