Разработан на основе CH-46 и широко эксплуатируется с начала 1960-х годов. Сменил в Армии США вертолёт H-37, позже — и CH-54. Состоит на вооружении более 20 стран мира. Кроме США, производился с 1970 г. в Италии (более 200 вертолётов) и Японии (фирмой «Кавасаки» произведено 54 вертолёта
