信越本線横川 – 軽井沢間の碓氷峠は最大66.7‰の急勾配区間を越えるために、183系をベースにEF63形電気機関車との協調運転装置を搭載された。
The Shin-Etsu Line Yokokawa-Karuizawa Usui Pass crosses a steep section up to 66.7 ‰, and is equipped with a coordinated operation system with an EF63 electric locomotive based on the 183 series.
