Spomen-muzej "21. oktobar" Kragujevac

Memorial Museum "21. October" Kragujevac

Memorial Museum "21. October "Kragujevac was built in 1976 as an integral part of the Memorial Park" Kragujevac October ". The museum building, as the most prominent building in the area of the Memorial Park, was erected according to the project of architects Ivan Antić and Ivanka Raspopović in the period from 1971 to 1976.
The symbolism of the October tragedy and the emphasized stylistic clarity was transferred as the basis of the architectural concept built in natural concrete and lined with red brick. The base consists of 30 cubes, which are grouped into bundles, which represent 30 mass graves in the Memorial Space.

The cubes are of different heights, from 4m to 21m, as was the different ages of the executed, from twelve-year-olds to people older than seventy. The absence of openings on the facades symbolizes the hopelessness and hopelessness of the people in front of the machine gun barrels, who seemed to be suddenly thrown into deep, dark wells, while the plexiglass openings on the tops of the cubes are distant traces of light and the last glances of the shot.

The plan of the building is based on the cross, a well-known Christian symbol of suffering, but also of triumph and victory.
