Description:

The item includes two vehicles of the Transit series model Mk.2 in two versions — van and minibus. The Transit became Europe’s best-selling light commercial vehicle for 40 years, and in some countries «Transit» was the name given to any commercial van of similar size. Since 1965, 6 million Ford Transits have been produced based on four platforms with several restylings for each of them.

Historical background

The Transit replaced the Ford Thames 400E, a small and narrow mid-engined, front-wheel drive van. Thames competed against the similarly similar but larger Morris Commercial J4, J2 vans and the Rootes Group’s Commer PB series. The English market was then dominated by Bedford CA. The main disadvantage of the Thames 400E was the limited loading area, which did not allow it to win a sufficient number of customers. So Ford went back to the drawing board and switched to a front-engined layout, following the course laid out in the 1950s by manufacturer Bedford with its well regarded CA series vans. The revolutionary step of Henry Ford was the unification of the developments of the British and German divisions of Ford.

The Transit differed from other European commercial vehicles in its American design – the wide track offered a large payload advantage over similar vehicles. Most of the Transit’s mechanical components were adapted from machines of the day. Another key to the Transit’s success is its wide variety of body styles: long and short wheelbase cargo vans, flatbed trucks, vans, double cabs, just to name a few. There is evidence that in the 70s, 95% of all robberies in which criminals used a car occurred with the participation of this Ford Transit model. The use of a front and rear drive axle instead of the Thames 400E’s independent front suspension system could be seen by some as a step in the past, but on the road, experts felt that the Transit’s wider track and longer wheelbase more than made up for the obvious step back. Drivers also appreciated the elimination of excessive cab heat that resulted from placing the driver above or right next to the engine bay in the Thames 400E and similar models.

The restyled Mk.2 replaced the first generation Ford in March 1978. It featured a redesigned nose section, a new interior, and the introduction of the Ford Cortina’s Pinto engine instead of the Essex V4. However, in early engines, many owners of transport companies had cases of premature wear of the camshaft. Powerful Transits designed for police and ambulances used a modification of the Ford Essex V6 engine. In 1984, the Transit received a facelift that included a gray plastic front grille with integrated light mounts, a wrapper around the turn signals, longer bumper end caps, and taillights for different purposes: fog, turn, reverse; also side lights for cargo vans. This minor restyling is usually attributed to the same model. The model was assembled in Belgium, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Turkey, New Zealand and Australia.
