Description:

I dunno if I would call this a survival tip in the classical sense of the word. Perhaps ‘survival’ isn’t the right word to begin with. Evasion, perhaps. From being tracked, both by predators and your ‘fellow man.’ The thing is, unless you’re well and truly living off the land as it were, you’re going to be leaving a mess wherever you go. Those tins of beans and soda bottles don’t just crumble into dirt when you toss them on the ground after you’re done with them, they stick around, leave a trail behind you. A trail that others might be keen to follow, for better… or worse.

That said, you can learn a lot from what someone throws away. Most of the time, they don’t give that cigarette butt or gum wrapper a second though. But it’s information, and to the right people, the right sorts of survivors that are practiced to look for it? That info’s worth gold. Out there in the Event zone, you can tell when someone’s passed by, just from the crap they litter behind them, and what they throw away can tell you a lot about them as well. Cigarette butts are common – most people forget about those the moment they leave their fingers. They don’t make those no more, so maybe they’re open to barter for more. Empty pill bottles and bloody bandages means someone’s injured. Food wrappers? They’re well supplied. Empty bullet cartons and shell casings? They’re VERY well supplied.

So what’s the trick? The trick is to NOT throw stuff away. Hold onto it, until you can find a place to dispose of it. Dig a hole and bury it, chuck it in a bin. You can burn it too, if you’re sure you’re not being tracked.

The point is, you can learn a lot about a guy from what they throw away.

The original Littering mod by Svarog, massively updated for B41 and beyond.

In brief, this mod aims to dramatically expand on the amount and variety of trash and garbage you might find in the post-apocalyptic wastes of Kentucky. Many, and I mean MANY vanilla in-game items now produce some form of trash item of some degree of usefulness, ranging from worthless like various candy wrappers to useful, such as empty bottles that can be filled with water. You may refer to the screenshots of just a few of the many examples of trash and litter you may now inadvertently create.

Fortunately, there are several methods of waste disposal. Bury it, burn it, or just toss it in a garbage can. Most items can be burned, save for certain things like metal containers and glass bottles. Some trash items can be used as fire starters too.

NOTE: This mod is currently in a beta state, and thus may be subject to small to moderate changes. With that said, I greatly appreciate bug reports, as well as comments and criticisms. I also welcome any suggestions, so long as they are within the scope of this mod – i.e., trash and just the trash. I also intend to make patches with this mod and other popular workshop mods too.
