Expanded Flags – Korea
Korea in vanilla Victoria 3 comes with two flags (or four, technically): the standard Taegukgi and the DPRK flag (as well as an anarchist Taeguk flag and a Chinese subject flag). While there is not much precendent, if any, for other official flags of the Korean state in the Victorian era, there are various historical flags out there that have seen minor use in certain specific points in history that could be adapted for a game like Victoria 3.
That’s where Expanded Flags – Korea comes in: with EFK, you gain a few additional flags and triggers for each of them, giving your Korean nation a little extra flavor to stand out from the rest.
In EFK, you will get:
• The Joseon Dynasty standard to represent the monarchy at the start of the game.
• The option to switch the dynastic standard out for the [vanilla] Taegukgi – as well as an option to switch back!
• The flag of the People’s Committees of Korea, used to represent democratic council republics.
• A flag based on the Joseon Navy ensign, used to represent fascist dictatorships, just like in HPM for Victoria II.
This mod makes no changes to any vanilla files, so it should be compatible with most other mods.
You may have limited success, conflicts, and/or errors if you use a mod that does any of the following:
• Remove Korea from the game [internally]
• Adjusts flag (COA) triggers
• Defines flags for Korea
EFK does NOT work with the East Asia Flavor Pack mod.
This mod works alone and may be placed anywhere.
This mod does not rely on any DLC features, so you should not need any DLCs.
• YES, you may include this mod in any modpacks/collections/whatever.
• YES, you may use this mod as a base to create your own. Credit and a link back here would be very much appreciated!
Credit goes to u/watchiam on r/vexillology for his high-resolution fictional rendition of the Joseon Navy ensign, closely matching the design used in the HPM mod for Victoria II for fascist Korea.
Flags guide:
• Joseon Dynasty Standard
– Starter flag
– Used while Korea still has a monarch
– Can be replaced with the Taegukgi via decision once freed from Chinese (or anyone else’s) overlordship and after research nationalism
– Can be returned if the Yangban Officials (landowners) are powerful and in government
• DPRK Flag
– Have a non-democratic council republic (i.e. council republic + autocracy or oligarchy)
• People’s Committees of Korea Flag
– Have a democratic council republic (i.e. not autocracy nor oligarchy)
• Anarchist Flag
– Adopt Anarchy (same as vanilla behavior)
• Fascist / War Flag
– Be a dictatorship with a leader with the Fascist ideology
• Taegukgi
– All else (theocracies and normal republics)
The Joseon Dynasty standard to Taegukgi swap decision is available only while Korea is still a monarchy. The decision requires Korea to be independent (i.e. the subject of nobody) and have Nationalism researched. A replacement decision to swap the flag back to the dynastic standard will appear after the swap and will remain visible until either the monarchy is abolished or the decision is taken. If the latter, the Taegukgi decision will reappear, allowing you to swap back and forth at your leisure. The dynastic standard decision requires the Yangban Officials (i.e. the Landowners interest group) be powerful and in the government.
AI may change the Joseon Dynasty standard out for the Taegukgi on their own volition if they’re independent and have researched Nationalism. After January 27, 1883, AI will get a major incentive to adopt the new flag to try to match the historical official adoption date of the original Taegukgi if the AI has not done so already. The AI will not ever take the decision to switch back to the dynastic standard.
