South Yemen gained its independence from Britain in 1967, declaring a socialist state after a 4 year guerilla campaign led by various national independence groups. In 1970 a Marxist-Leninist faction gained influence, and declared a soviet-style centrally-planned economy that year. The economy grew rapidly, and society was secularised, securing the highest standard of women’s rights in the Middle East, however wars with North Yemen stifled growth as the republic matured.

This map represents the centre of the Hadhramaut Governorate, the centre of the former Qu’aiti Sultanate, and some of the most economically-promising parts of the new republic.

You must install the required mod for this map to work, as well as the included texture pack.

Roleplaying Tips:
-Start in 1970, the year central planning began.
-Rely on building up agriculture for the first few years.
-Oil was discovered in the 1980s, which funded most later development.
-A pipeline was built from Sha’ab al-Nur to the coast west of Ash Shihr, and a port was built next to the mesa.
-RAF Riyan was left abandoned after a few years in favour of Riyan international, which became a major hub.
-Most urbanisation occurred between Fuwwah and Rukob.
-In the 1970s the state sold weapons in return for foreign landrovers and pickup trucks, which were distributed among party members.
-In addition to oil, the region also exported cement, crops, and plastics.

Beware that this is a hard map to play!
-This is a very resource-scarce map with few available deposits apart from oil.
-Yemen historically had no rail links whatsoever, so no border crossings have rail access.
-Yemen historically had little electricity, and relied on local diesel generators rather than a national grid. No border electricity is available.
