Details

The BR Class 380 "Desiro" is an EMU originally manufactured by Siemens Mobility for use on the cancelled Glasgow Airport Rail Link. Since their introduction in 2010 they have primarily seen use on suburban and regional routes out of Glasgow Central, although they have been operated on electrified routes across Scotland at various times, including as an interim replacement for the delayed Class 385 on the Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk High route.

The class comes in 3-car and 4-car sets, of which up to 3 can be coupled allowing for formations up to 12 cars, although the longest currently in use are 8-car formations.

With a top speed of 100 mph (161 km/h) this train is best suited for medium-distance commuter lines and regional services. It can reach 100 km/h in just under 45 seconds and its top speed in under 2 minutes, although some formations have a higher proportion of powered cars and can reach these speeds significantly quicker.

This version contains the following liveries, including 1 which was retired before this class came into service, and 1 which was being actively phased out:

  • ScotRail Saltire (current)
  • SPT Carmine & Cream (retired between 2013 and 2019, phase-out planned from 2008)
  • Strathclyde Transport Orange & Black (retired in the late 1990s)

There is also a version with separately selectable body and door colours.
