Launched in 1973, "New Generation" was a completely new design with a completely new look. Construction vehicles were the first to be released, followed in 1974 by a version with a 600 mm longer sleeper cab. From 1977, three cab variants were available: the short cab (S-Fahrerhaus), the medium cab (M-Fahrerhaus) with narrow rear side windows and the so-called Fernverkehrskabine or L-Fahrerhaus, a larger sleeping cabin with two beds.
