arrows, sling bullets, and javelins, have mass, and the heavier the missle, the more likely it is to knock someone over, or stagger them. arrows are the lightest, sling bullets are medium weight, and javelins are the heaviest.
you can slow down a unit with missle fire, disrupting their formation, obviously this effect stacks with number of units shooting at said unit.
