The imperial examination (科举) system is a system of selecting talents based on examination results. This system is a great invention of Chinese rulers. Yang Jian, the founder of the Sui Dynasty, ended China’s 300-year-long North-South split and was ambitious to build a strong and long-term empire. Therefore, a suitable talent selection system must be established to end the patriarchal politics in the Northern and Southern Dynasties. This is why the imperial examination system was born. Later rulers of the Tang Dynasty, including Li Shimin and Wu Zetian, inherited and improved this system. At the same time, due to the great influence of the Chinese Empire on East Asia, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and other countries have also followed this system. In 1919, the last imperial examination in history ended in Vietnam. But this does not mean the end of the system. On the contrary, it continues to evolve and widely exists in today’s East Asia.
