During its initial debut in 1943, the Tiger was deployed in Africa and the Soviet Union, often in independent heavy tank battalions.

The Tiger featured a Maybach HL230 engine (replacing the HL210 in late 1943, which was prone to overheating), and was designed with a steering wheel instead of the standard twin brake levers of the time, making it much easier to handle than most other tanks. It was also equipped with the powerful 8.8 cm KwK 36 cannon – capable of accurately penetrating enemy armor at long-range distances.

Although the Tiger was considered ahead of its time and mechanically reliable, it suffered greatly from breakdowns and conditions that could otherwise immobilize it, such as mud, ice, snow, and poor weather conditions.
