Dom penzionera Sarajevo.

Iste godine, u okviru UNove mirnovne misije, u dom useljavaju kanadski i švedski vojnici.

Retirement home Sarajevo.

English:

In 1986, the Social Fund for Pensions and Disability Insurance of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced a competition for the conceptual design of the building of the Retirement Home. The solution of the company Arhitekt was chosen, with Mr. Mladen Gvozden as the main designer, and the contractor was the company GP Bosna. The project cost were about 16 million Deutsch Mark, about 1000 DM per square meter. Gross area was 16000m2, and net about 11000m2. The capacity in the main part of the building was 150 beds, with double and triple rooms, which could also function as hotel rooms if needed.

Intensive care rooms were located on the top floor of the main building, which were connected by an elevator to the basement where the laundry room and morgue were located. It was envisaged that the deceased patients would be transported by elevator directly to the morgue, without any contact with other residents.

In the back side, behind the main building, were apartments, which the tenants could arrange individually. Complete furniture and sanitary equipment were adapted to the elderly population, e.g., high beds and toilets.

The building is recognizable by its brightly colored facade, which is why the inhabitants of Sarajevo affectionately called it Disneyland. It is also interesting to mention the fact that it was planned to move in a group of canaries who would be in the lobby, and who would be taken care of by the tenants themselves.
The retirement home was completely finished at the beginning of 1992, but unfortunately, due to the beginning of the war, the facility was never officially open. In the same year, as part of the UN peacekeeping mission, Canadian and Swedish soldiers moved in. Many photos showing the home in its original condition, which are available on the Internet today, were taken by Canadian and Swedish soldiers, who called this facility the "Rainbow Hotel". Already in mid-May 1992, the home suffered extensive damage, as it was close to the line of conflict. In the same month, due to excessive danger, UN soldiers left the facility, which has since been left at the mercy of war destruction and opportunistic robbers. In the last 26 years since the end of the war, there have been a couple of attempts to start the renovation process, but unfortunately, they have never been realized, although there is a real need because the existing capacities of retirement homes are overcrowded.

At the end of 2019, the home was sold at an auction to the company Capital Holding by Syrian businessman Abdullah Mehdi, but the purchase agreement was annulled at the end of 2020, because the buyer did not fulfill its obligations. In 2021, the former retirement home was resold for 20.1 million Convertible Marks (€ 102.6 million), and the buyer was Mont-ing d.o.o. from Visoko (Bosnia and Herzegowina). The contract was signed in January 2022, and the buyer has 60 days to pay the remaining amount of 19 million KM, otherwise the contract is annulled.

The plan of the owner of the company is to demolish the existing building and build residential and business facilities in that area.
