Description:
"If I follow my bright one’s heart,
My life and faith, ever apart.
If I retreat to hallowed hills,
then I betray my dear girl’s wills."
– Tsangyang Gyatso

Those who visit the scenic Gyantse County will be stunned by the view of the Palcho Monastery and its iconic kumbum (multi-storied stupa). The Palcho Monastery was founded in the early 15th century, and unlike other Tibetan Buddhist monasteries owned by a single sect, this monastery complex houses monks from multiple sects, including Gelug, Sakya and Zhalu. The Kumbum of the Palcho Monastery is a nine-storied structure consisting of 108 Buddhist chapels, and accommodates over one hundred thousand Buddhist holy images in the form of statues and murals. The structure of the kumbum was meant to represent a three-dimensional mandala, displaying the Tibetan Buddhist understanding of the universe and the path to enlightenment.
