Cataph’s Syracuse 2.0 (unit expansion)
A few of you might already know this stuff, this being a revamp of an old mod of ours already part of our GREEK pack.
Allow me to introduce it with a quote:
"But I am ready to help you by offering 200 triremes and 20000 hoplites and 2000 horse(hippeis) and 2000 archers and 2000 slingers and 2000 fast-light armed horsemen […], and I also undertake the obligation to provide the whole of Greek troops with grain, for as long as we may fight." Gelon of Syracuse, speaking of the troops he would send when responding to the mainland Greeks asking for help in the eve of Xerxes assault on Greece (which led to the "300" final stand at Thermopylai).
Herodotus, Polymnia 158, credits to Roma Surre ctum II* crew. From their descriptions for Syracuse faction.
*damn filter.
Gelon’s words, unless or even if they are an empty show off, make clear that Syracuse was serious stuff that was able to prod some serious backside.
And what are we doing to represent that beyond the vanilla athenian roster Syracusai can field?
You can check them out in the screenshots above.
But you want to know what’s the catch… We chose to remove the thorax hoplites (although replaced). Yeah, well, as it were, Athens was having no cake because someone else had eaten it all. At least they have something to brag about.
– Syracusan Royal Hoplites (heavy hoplites)
– Syracusan Bodyguard (somatophylakes, uber-heavy lancers)
– Syracusan Nobles (hipparchoi, heavy lancers)
– Syracusan Lancers (lonchophoroi)
– Syracusan Aspis Skirmishers (aspidophoroi, heavy horse skirmishers)
– Corsico-Sardinian Infantry (quality archers)
– Italian Hoplites (decent spammable hoplites)
– Italian Picked Hoplites (excellent hoplites)
Added for recruitment:
– Italian Swordsmen
– Archers hepteres
– maybe more.
With the GREEK pack they will also reform their thorax swords into Hellenic Legionaries.
HISTORICAL FLUFF I ACTUALLY END UP NOT WRITING:
Well, we know what we can expect from a rich greek poleis. Hoplite warfare. Ships. The latest fashion in oval shields and chainmails they might have read on “Legionary Today” or “Sword and Board: all you want to know about straight blades”. Except that Syracuse was also famous for their cavalry, which contributed a lot to their victory against the athenian expedition, and later they were apparently experimenting the use of chainmail hauberks beneath linothoraxes for their Tyrants’ foot and mounted bodyguards. Fancy stuff.
TECH INFO:
This pack is a complete one and will override the old one and its component within the GREEK megapack. You can use it alone or with them. Crash and gluten free.
Now includes a compatibility table that will let you recruit auxiliaries if you are using Auxilia for Everyone or similar mods.
Please note that the screenshots were made with other mods enabled (I’m that lazy), both ours and from other guys, like Sebidee’s linothoraxes, Mackles’ hoplons and Thunderbolt II’s Notitia Dignitatum. Their features might or might not be spotted in the screens but I’m reporting this anyway because fair’s fair.
