Description:
All parts of the Manic’s Expanded Factions mod are standalone packs.
Do NOT run any of them together!

Welcome to Manic’s Emergent Factions. A little mini-mod that gives a little love to the unplayable emergents of Thrones of Britannia.

Do you lie awake at night, tossing and turning in anger over the fact you can never lead an army of East Saxons against invading Viking hordes or lead the Dene to victory on the rolling chalky hills of the Cotswolds against the Royal Companions of Alfred the Great? Well, dear insomniac, look no further!

With this mod active, you’ll be able to play as any of the emergent factions in custom battles. Yes, this mod enables emergent factions for custom battles only. Unfortunately, unlocking them for the grand campaign is still something only the big-boy modders can do.

This should also work for multiplayer battles but don’t quote me on that as I have no means of testing it. AvPD can be a cruel mistress. If you’re someone who actually has friends and this does not work, please do let me know so I can attempt to fix it. Also, while it’s pretty self-explanatory, I must stress that all players in a lobby MUST have this mod active in order for it to work.

Factions
English Kingdoms
  • East Seaxe – The Kingdom of the East Saxons. One of the former English realms that made up the seven traditional kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxon heptarchy, it has since been fully subjugated by Danish East Anglia but had already long since lost any effective independence to Mercia nearly a century prior.
  • Hwicce – The Hwicce were an Anglo-Saxon peoples and early sub-kingdom that occupied the areas of modern Gloucestershire and parts of Herefordshire. It was absorbed into the Mercian Kingdom early in its history.
  • Dorsaete – The modern English county of Dorset, the heartlands of the ancient Kingdom of the West Saxons and the historic border territory between the English and the ancient Dumnonians of modern Cornwall and Devon.

Welsh Kingdoms
  • Cumbra – The last cultural remnant of the Hen Ogledd or ‘Old North’ south of Hadrian’s Wall. Once home to great Brythonic kingdoms such as Rheged, the region of Cumbria has since fallen under Anglo-Saxon overlordship.

Gaelic Kingdoms
  • Airer Goidel – The Gaelic peoples of the western coast of modern Scotland that resist both native Pictish and foreign Norse overlordship alike.

Vikings
  • Dene – The organised and disciplined armies of the Kingdom of Denmark. Not just another band of Viking raiders, but a dedicated invasion force from across the North Sea.
  • Jorvik – Old Norse toponym for the English city of Eoforwic and the etymology for its modern name, York.
  • Dubgaill – Middle Irish term for Viking raiders. Debate over meaning. Traditionally thought to mean either ‘Dark‘ or ‘Old Foreigners‘.
  • Finngaill – Middle Irish term for Viking raiders. Debate over meaning. Traditionally thought to mean either ‘Fair‘ or ‘New Foreigners‘.
  • Haeden – Filthy heathens! No, seriously. From the Old English ‘Hæðen‘.
  • Nordmann – A historic and modern Scandinavian demonym for ‘Norwegian’ (plural ‘Nordmenn‘). It’s apparent that this is where we get the English word, ‘Northman’
  • Wicing – Old English word for ‘Viking’, most likely derived from the Old Norse ‘Víkingr‘.
FAQs

When can I conquer England as East Seaxe or Hwicce?
No idea. Unlocking emergent factions for the campaign is next-level modding to me. Unless I can find a helpful tutorial for novice modders anytime soon, you’ll likely have to wait for someone with more experience to release their own mod. Apologies.

My game crashes when the battle is loading!
This happens to me occasionally. My advice is not to panic and try it a few more times before reporting an issue. If it fails a second time, it can normally (for me) be fixed by changing the battle location.
