Why have a battering ram when you can use an explosive?
These units are typically used to break into enemy bunkers or buildings. They are typically not allowed to use their grenade launcher in the actual battlefield due to morality issues, but in dire situations they are allowed to use it against infantry. Because of this limitation, they will always have atleast one or two trooper escorts.
