FATE

On June 15, 1954, a major conflict called the Battle of the Great Aegean Sea took place 17.5 kilometers off the coast of Çanakkale in the Aegean Sea, resulting in intense fighting between Turkey and the United States. The TCG Muzaffer (CA-5) Rauf Orbay I-class cruiser, under the command of Rear Admiral Mehmet Ali Ülgen, who was in charge of Turkey’s defense, faced a powerful American fleet commanded by Grand Admiral Chester William Nimitz.

The TCG Muzaffer, the only ship owned by Turkey, fought relentlessly to defend its navy to the best of its ability. However, the American forces were highly effective and well-equipped. The American fleet consisted of the USS Iowa (BB-61) battleship, USS Essex (CV-9) and USS Midway (CV-41) aircraft carriers, USS Fletcher (DD-445) and USS Benson (DD-421) destroyers. Additionally, the USS Essex carried 60 Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers and 30 Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bombers, while the USS Midway carried modified F6F Hellcat fighter planes for dive bombing purposes, 12 B-25 bombers adapted for aircraft carrier use, and 18 SB2C Helldiver attack planes. Furthermore, seven B-29 Superfortress bombers from the US Air Force were sent as support. Grand Admiral Chester William Nimitz, the American commander, aimed to overcome the Turkish defense and seize Dardanelles.

At 6:35 PM, the battle commenced in the Aegean Sea, 19.5 kilometers off the coast of Dardanelles. Turkish commander Rear Admiral Mehmet Ali Ülgen prepared the TCG Muzaffer for battle while the ship’s crew was in a state of tense anticipation.

The TCG Muzaffer bravely engaged the American ships in combat. As shells fired from its guns advanced toward their targets, the American ships retaliated in the same manner. Intense artillery fire and torpedo launches occurred between the ships. The US aircraft also launched air strikes against the TCG Muzaffer.

While evading the American fire through careful maneuvers, the TCG Muzaffer inflicted significant damage on the American ships with its effective firepower. The TCG Muzaffer’s artillery shots hit the USS Iowa’s ammunition depot, causing severe damage and leading to the ship splitting in half and sinking. The USS Essex also suffered heavy damage from the TCG Muzaffer’s salvo fire and was unable to avoid sinking. The USS Midway, unable to combat the fires caused by the TCG Muzaffer’s accurate shots, took on water and sank due to the fires spreading to its engine room.

As the TCG Muzaffer continued its attacks, it also sank American destroyers like the USS Fletcher and USS Benson. Furthermore, the TCG Muzaffer’s effective fire rendered Douglas SBD Dauntless Pike dive bombers, Grumman TBF Avenger Torpedo Bombers, F6F Hellcat Pike dive bombing versions, modified B-25 bombers for aircraft carrier use, and SB2C Helldiver planes stationed on the USS Essex ineffective. Additionally, the strategically important B-29 Superfortress bombers of the US were hit by the TCG Muzaffer.

However, after 59 hours of conflict, the TCG Muzaffer ran out of ammunition and sustained cracks in its hull from 22 bombs hitting its structure, causing it to take on water and begin sinking.

Thanks to the resistance shown by the TCG Muzaffer, the American navy was unable to occupy Dardanelles. Rear Admiral Mehmet Ali Ülgen, the Turkish defense commander, entered history with his courageous battle on TCG Muzaffer, while the US navy was forced to retreat with heavy losses.

In conclusion, although the TCG Muzaffer displayed great heroism against the US navy, the American forces ultimately emerged victorious. This conflict was recorded as a significant turning point in Turkish maritime history, and the determined struggle of the TCG Muzaffer, Mehmet Ali Ülgen, and its crew is remembered as an unforgettable example of resilience. They continue to be respected and commemorated worldwide.
