Brutal Battles is a battle spacing overhaul that retains vanilla stats and balance while making clashes more chaotic, fierce, and realistic. Watch infantry push and shove to the front as they hack away at the foe, with the addition of improved unit collisions during charges and tightened unit formations. Units such as spearmen now present a bristling solid wall of steel instead of leaving large gaps in their formation, now providing ample deterrent to any brash cavalry charge. Magic becomes more powerful due to the closer combat and packed battle formations, and cavalry charges all but trample smaller creatures within seconds, if they are not stationary.

  • Numerous units (160, Zombies, Goblins etc.) have a much smaller collision box per soldier, allowing them to swarm enemies, but are more susceptible to magic, explosives, and AoE attacks from large units.
  • Lore friendly unit spacing for every faction and unit.
  • Units now have an easier time moving through each other
  • Untouched vanilla unit stats
  • 120° fire arc for most ranged units.
  • Improved charges and collision.

As Brutal Battles only utilizes 3 tables, it has high compatibility with other mods. Where it has issues are with large overhauls, such as Radious and Steel Faith Overhaul. Now while Brutal Battles and big overhauls won’t work seamlessly, they won’t crash your game and the two mods will roughly work together. Brutal Battles will continue to provide compact unit formations and the overhauls will apply the stat changes and other additions.

To reiterate, Brutal Battles and big overhauls work in a sort of jury-rigged sort of way, as you’ll miss any speed, acceleration, deceleration, spacing, and tables of that sort. Overhaul stats will remain, though.

TL;DR: Use Brutal Battles alongside Overhauls if you’re okay with losing some speed related tables. Don’t use it if you’re expecting 100% seamless compatibility even though it won’t break the game or balancing much, imo.

Also, do not try to use custom units with Brutal Battles. It will not work.

  • 11/11/2016 – Edited Greenskin spacing. Loosened ranged unit spacing to match normal units.
  • 9/12/2016 – Updated for Realm of the Wood Elves DLC.
  • 7/1/2016 – Tightened monstrous formations, very slightly decreased their individual model space, and also very slightly increased individual model spacing for standard infantry units. (Only a teensy bit because they were clipping)
  • 1/3/2017 – Updated for omelette du fromage DLC.
  • 5/4/2017 – Updated Orc + Beastmen spacing to be more disorganized.
  • 5/1/2017 – Updated standard infantry/ranged (e.g. Swordsmen, Men At Arms, Bowmen, Crossbows, etc.) to have slightly more formation variation so they aren’t perfect lines. More realism.
  • 27/7/2017 – Updated swarm infantry (e.g. zombies, skeleton warriors, goblins…) so that they don’t have as many collision and clipping issues. Charges should look better with these units.
  • 11/8/2017 – Updated for Norsca.
  • 31/8/2017 – Updated individual soldier spacing for small units so they don’t clip as much during charges in addition to tweaking the charges.
  • 26/9/2017 – Readded charge fix by tweaking values in kv_rules. Units will clip much less during charges with no changes to decceleration.
  • 17/10/2017 – Updated with Brutal Battles v2. from Warhammer II.
