Lore:
The Maelstrom Initiative’s home world, and the only system under its control, is an ocean planet frequented by ship-breaking storms. To survive in such harsh conditions, they use several leviathan-sized waterborne ships to fish, underwater mine, & hunt the various large leviathans of the sea, these creatures sometimes rivaling the size of their ships at times. These ships normally rival sizes of dreadnaughts in space. They can be spotted with difficulty from space as they slowly move their way across the planet with armor exceeding the standard spaceborne vessels.
Despite the vicious and frequent storms, there are points on the surface without these constant storms being described as tropical paradises. They have used these scattered points to transport items from the surface to large stations within space, where the population is held. They also frequently host waterborne races in these areas.
Because of the tradition of large shipbuilding, they focus on cruisers and battleships rather than the traditional destroyer focus of many navies. Due to this, all of their cruisers can carry smaller ships with them, acting as miniature carriers. This doctrine evolved from their waterborne traditions, with the larger space-born vessels taking after their waterborne counterparts.
Their economy was devastated after a series of nearby conflicts brought them into the targets of several factions. This conflict eventually cumulated in the orbital nuking of their leviathan ships, sinking many of them and shattering their once powerhouse economy. With this, the Maelstrom initiative was formed to create a fleet capable of ensuring nothing like this would happen again. With the expansion of their spaceborne navy, their economy has become scratched thin as they rebuild the leviathans of old.
