Description:

The DX class is a type of 49 Co-Co locomotives operated on New Zealand’s national network. Built by GE Transportation in Erie, Pennsylvania they were delivered between 1972-76. Based on the General Electric U26C the locomotives are widely regarded as the most successful purchase in NZR history. Initially purchased for heavy freight trains on the NIMT the class has eventually spread over all of New Zealand and seen service on passenger lines as well. Powered by a V12 turbocharged 7FDL-12 engine generating 2750 HP in its original form and 3000 HP in its uprated form the DX was the most powerful locomotive in New Zealand until the introduction of the DL class. Over the years the type has spawned three sub-classes, the DXB ( with Brightstar electronic traction control ) the DXC ( fitted with ‘chutes’ over the air intakes for tunnel running and the Brightstar system ) and the DXR, a complete rebuild with a brand new engine, new cab and more angular design.
