GWR 2-2-2 69 Class. Designed by the GWR’s Daniel Gooch and built in 1855 by Beyer, Peacock & Co., 8 were built. The large single driving wheel was typical of passenger engines of the period. The large diameter was a simple engineering solution that allowed the standard piston stroke length to give a higher top speed, albeit at the expense of traction.
GWR 2-2-2 69 Class Rebuild. In the mid 1870s the 69 Class were rebuilt (largely as new engines) and in 1880 cabs were fitted. Around 1890 they were fitted with new domed boilers. In 1895 they were completely rebuilt again, only retaining their boilers and numbers, they became the 2-4-0 River Class. The last was withdrawn in 1918.
