Description:

The V3201 / V120 001 was a diesel locomotive of the German Reichsbahn (DR) with pneumatic power transmission. In 1924 the DR issued an order for the development of a powerful diesel locomotive for the passenger train service on main and secondary lanes. Since today’s electrical or hydraulic power transmission was not yet developed, the problem of the power transmission between the engine and the wheels, which is crucial for large diesel locomotives, was solved via a pneumatic system. The test drives resulted in several changes, so that the 1927 built locomotive, initially designated as V 3201, was put into service in 1929. It was assigned to the Reichsbahn Directorate of Stuttgart and in 1930 it was renamed V 120 001.
