Nowy Świat 15
The house at ul. Nowy Świat 15 in Warsaw is a tenement house built in a socialist realist style. The original house was destroyed during the Second World War and was rebuilt between 1949-1950. It was designed by Zygmunt Stępiński. It was the office of the Social Fund for the Reconstruction of the Capital, and became famous for the large inscription on its facade that reads ‘CAŁY NARÓD BVDVJE SWOJĄ STOLICĘ’ (The whole nation builds its capital) The mosaic was made by Władysław Zych and finished by his wife Wanda Zych. The mosaic depicts the People’s Guard attacks on the ‘Café Club’ carried out by members of the People’s Guard in 1942 and the Union of Young Fighters in 1943 on German officers. It is the only surviving example of historical propaganda from the communist era in Warsaw.
