Recon units are better at exploration.

The extra vision can be especially useful on larger maps.

Early scouts are more survivable. The extra vision helps them avoid and escape from barbarians.

Finding tribal villages and natural wonders occurs more quickly meaning that recon units can potentially earn promotions more quickly.

Uncovering the map more quickly means that empire planning begins sooner.

Caution:

Rival civilizations also benefit.

Barbarian scouts can spot your cities more quickly.
