Description:

Although GTA 5 is not focused on the railways, there is a diesel locomotive in the game. This engine can be seen running on the freight lines in the city of Los Santos, as well as Blane County. It doesn’t appear to be based on a specific locomotive design, but I think she best resembles the EMD GP20, and the cab interior is said to resemble that of a General Electric AC4400CW. The number carried by my reskin is that of a real-life DX.

The locomotive we know now as DXC 5195 was built as DX 2617 in 1975, and by General Electric. The GE company built 49 DX’s, and the class entered service between 1972 and 1976. The class was first outshopped in the distinctive Clockwork Orange livery. DX 2617 was renumbered as 5195 in 1978, as part of the introduction of the Traffic Monitoring System. The computerised TMS system is still in use today.

DX 5195 was repainted into the now-classic International Orange livery in the early 1980’s. Sometime in 1988 or 1989, the DX class was modified to have their small two-piece cab windows replaced with a large single-piece windscreen. This was due to the introduction of single-man crewing at the time, and the single-piece windscreen helped to improve visibility for the driver.

Curiously, 5195 retained the International Orange livery right into the 2000’s. Thus, she never received Tranz Rail blue. Unfortunately the engine was involved in a derailment in January 2002. The other locomotive involved in the accident was DC 4686, which was sadly scrapped in 2006. Fortunately DX 5195 is still around today.

The DX was repainted in Tranz Rail black in December 2002. Around the same time, she was fitted with the distinctive air-intakes or ‘chutes’, which were used to help crew ventilation in the Otira Tunnel. This tunnel is on the line from Christchurch to Greymouth in the South Island. For whatever reason, 5195 was reclassified as DXH 5195 after being repainted in Tranz Rail black.

5195 is still in service as a ‘coal route’ DX today. She was one of the lucky DX’s, in the sense that she never received the hideous Toll Rail livery. The state-owned KiwiRail was launched in July 2008, ending New Zealand’s 15 year long experiment with privatised railways. Interestingly DXH 5195 – now reclassified as a DXC – wasn’t repainted in the KiwiRail livery until November 2012.
