It is STRONGLY recommended to disable vehicle damage when using this vehicle, as the new tracks are a bit wack and might result in the train exploding.

This vehicle is WABSIM compatible with normal coupling, but is not capable of controlling or being used as a Distributed Power Unit (DPU) as the technology was not available at the time this locomotive was designed.


History

The EMD SD9, also referred to as a "Cadillac" for the smooth, soft ride, was Electro-Motive Division’s second model in its six-axle Special Duty series.

By using an updated version of General Motors’ proven prime mover of the time, the model 567, provided the SD9 a 1,750 horsepower rating, 250 more horsepower than the earlier SD7. While the locomotive also had the option of an added steam boiler for use in passenger service, only a few railroads would install the feature with their SD9s, including the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railroad, Burlington Northern (Not 6187), and Southern Pacific.

The SD9 was the most successful first-generation six-axle locomotive EMD produced, selling more than 500 units. While the 515 SD9s ultimately sold paled in comparison to the more than 4,000 four-axle GP9s outshopped, more than a dozen Class I railroads purchased the new six-axle model. Many of the companies that purchased the SD9 had also bought or tested at least one SD7.

Burlington Northern 6187 was originally built for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in 1957 as CB&Q 440 and painted in the unique "Chinese" red scheme. After the CB&Q merged with the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle (SP&S) railroads on March 2, 1970 to form the Burlington Northern Railroad (BN), 440 was repainted in the Burlington Northern "Cascade green" scheme and renumbered to 6187. For the rest of her days until 1986, 6187 would serve as a road switcher around Burlington Northern’s Clyde Yard in Cicero, Illinois before eventually being scrapped.


Operating the Vehicle

Notes:

  • The Selector can only be moved with the Throttle in idle (0) and the Reverser in either Forwards (-1) or Reverse (1).
  • The Throttle can only be increased or decreased with the Selector in "OFF" (-0.2) or "RUN" (-0.29 to 0) and the Reverser in any position. (1).
  • The Reverser can only be moved with the Throttle in idle (0) and the Selector in "OFF" (-0.3) or "RUN" (-0.29 to 0).
  • The switches to change the front class light colors are inside the front hood which can be accessed using the door in the cab, and the switches to change the rear class light colors are under the headlights on the rear.

Preparations & Startup:

  1. Enter the cab of the locomotive.
  2. On the back wall, open the electrical control cabinet with the key button located near the floor. Toggle every switch that you see.
  3. On the back wall, above the electrical control cabinet, toggle the "FUEL PUMP SWITCH", "ALTERNATOR FIELD", and "AUX. GEN. FIELD" switches.
  4. Head to the engineer’s control stand. On the large panel with 12 switches, toggle the "CONTROL", "FUEL PUMP BREAKER", and "GENERATOR FIELD" breakers.
  5. Toggle the "MU-2A CUT-IN VALVE" and "BRAKE CUT-IN VALVE" on the gray stand.
  6. Open the back door of the cab. Move down the right side of the locomotive and open the engine room door on the right of the "6187" numbering.
  7. Hold the "Fuel Prime" button until the indicator glows and release.
  8. Hold the "Start Engine" button until the RPM gauge climbs over 200 and release.
  9. After starting the engine, enter the cab of the locomotive.
  10. On the back wall, toggle the "ISOLATION SWITCH" key button to connect the generator to the engine.

Moving:

  1. Head to the engineer’s control stand. Using the "Selector Up" button, set the selector lever between -0.29 and 0 to put the locomotive in "RUN".
  2. Use the Reverser buttons to dictate the direction you want the locomotive to move in (Reverse = -1 and Forwards = 1).
  3. Use the Throttle buttons to control the locomotive’s speed (0 = Idle, 1 = Minimum Power, 8 = Maximum Power).

Braking:

  • The Automatic Brakes control the brakes of the entire train, which includes your railcars and locomotives. Pushing the Automatic Brakes to 1.2 will activate emergency braking. The Automatic Brake can not be gradually reduced and must be fully reset to the off position in order to reduce braking force.
  • The Independent Brakes control the brakes of only the locomotives. Pushing the Independent Brake to -0.2 (Bail Off) will prevent the Automatic Brake lever from affecting the brakes of the locomotives, and only affect the railcars.
  • Dynamic brakes are meant to be used only while the locomotive is moving. Ensure that your Throttle has been set to idle (0) and your Reverser is set to either Forwards (-1) or Reverse (1). Then, move the Selector past 0 to dynamic brake (0.01 = Minimum Dynamic Braking Force, 1 = Maximum Dynamic Braking Force). DO NOT FORGET TO SET THE SELECTOR LEVER BACK BETWEEN -0.29 AND 0 AFTER USING THE DYNAMIC BRAKES TO ENSURE THAT THE LOCOMOTIVE IS STILL SET TO "RUN".

Multiple Unit Operation:

Everything else in the "Startup" instructions that are not mentioned below should be done as written.

  • When operating multiple locomotives together, adjacent locomotives first need to be hooked up using electrical cables. You can find cables stored above the wedges above the couplers.
  • If there is only one locomotive in the train, toggle the "MU-2A CUT-IN VALVE" and "BRAKE CUT-IN VALVE", set the Selector to "RUN" (-0.29 to 0), and set the "HEADLIGHT CONTROL" to 1 : Lead/Intermediate. Follow everything as written in the "Startup" and "Moving" sections.
  • If there are multiple locomotives in the train:
    In the leading locomotive: Toggle the "MU-2A CUT-IN VALVE" and "BRAKE CUT-IN VALVE", set the Selector to "RUN" (-0.29 to 0), and set the "HEADLIGHT CONTROL" to 2:Master Front Fwd or 3:Master Rear Fwd depending on which way the locomotive is facing.
    In the trailing (helping) locomotives: Turn off the "MU-2A CUT-IN VALVE" and "BRAKE CUT-IN VALVE", set the Selector to "OFF" (-0.3), and set the "HEADLIGHT CONTROL" to 4:Controlled.
