Description:

A 4-pack of different engines Indiana Eastern used for America’s Bicenntennial, including-

H-60 No. 1500 (renumbered to 1776)
SD45 No. 4918 (renumbered to 1876)
SW1 No. 300 (renumbered to 1976, kept the new number until scrapping)

1500 (aka 1776) has 2 variants in this pack, one was used for most of 1975-1977, and the other was used when it pulled the Freedom Train from Chicago, IL to Erie, PA. It also got a double-header with 4449 AND 2101 during these periods, and had a Auxillary tender completely rebuilt to be a normal tender that was streamlined and painted to match the coaches.

1876 (the SD45) had a similar concept to the first 1776 scheme, where it had the American flag (similar to what UP uses on some diesels) with the American seal on the left, and the Indiana seal on the right, with the rest of the sides being striped red, white, and blue. It also used it’s iconic red color instead of the US flag red, as a paint-shop worker heard about what the CC&P had done to their Bicenntennial unit, pitched the idea to IER (I wasn’t president of the railroad at the time), and it happened. It also has 19 stars on the front nose, representing Indiana being the 19th state, and 50 on the back.

1976 (the SW1) was quite simple, with a red, white, and blue stripe pattern on all sides. It served in yard service until a wreck while on a interchange run in December 1976, and was sold and scrapped shortly after.

While 1976 was scrapped, 1876 still runs in revenue service on IER today. IER kinda treats it as a heritage unit in rememberence of 1976, as the old SD45 still runs in it’s Bicenntennial scheme. 1876 was renumbered again to 4300 in 2011 to make room for some Ex-DMIR GP30s.

And of course, 1776 was renumbered back to 1500 in January 1977 and still runs as part of IER’s steam program today, along with 2-6-2 No.1, 2-8-6 No.2, 1400, 1401, 1402, 105, and recently aquired Columbus Road 4-6-2 No. 4635.
