Background:
At the end of WWI, the DSIR faced the 1920s with rising maintenance costs. In hopes of repairing their leaking bottom line, the board green-lit a project that converted some of their ageing passenger cars to accept newly built diesel engines, and become self-propelled railcars.
DSIR #209 started out as a wooden passenger car built in 1887 and served the DSIR faithfully for 23 years before being rebuilt as a ‘Doodlebug’. Reborn as its own locomotive with a snappy art-deco paint scheme, No. 209 continued to dutifully transfer passengers between stations well into the 1970’s till at last it was decommissioned at the end of DSIR passenger services. But unlike all of her insect sisters, 209 was preserved as a static display near the old Holt Town station which she served for so many years. Starting in 2009, 209 was restored to operating condition and has since become a popular unit on a tourist railroad running on old DSIR track from the North Harbor.
