The locomotive at the time of the crash on September 27, 1903, It was Train 97 for the Fast Mail, which traveled between Washington DC, and Atlanta, Georgia. The engineer 33 year old Joseph Andrew "Steve" Broady died in the locomotive’s cab after derailing at Stillhouse Trestle in Danville, Virginia, when 1102 was on its way to Spencer, North Carolina from Monroe, Virginia. 1102 derailed due to excessive speed, it would continue service until July 9, 1935 when it got scrapped.
