A non-canon mod that adds a fourth playable faction, the Hutt Cartel, and over 100 units and heroes to the game. SoaFE focuses on providing a fun and balanced skirmish experience for both casual and competitive players while also fixing many bugs found in vanilla FoC.

[Space Skirmish]
Space skirmish is now split into 2 primary gamemodes. The default maps play similarly to the vanilla game and are a great way to ease into the mod. Tournament maps found in the "Special & Custom Maps" tab are rebalanced to be almost perfectly symmetrical. They are designed for 2 teams and have a 3rd "spectator" team for streamers or players who’d rather relax and watch a live game. Tournament maps also feature a new secondary starbase called the Research Station. This station allows you research upgrades, recruit heroes, and construct unique units like mine layers and super star destroyers.

Three unique custom maps – Atzerri Lockdown, Onderon Outrage, and Velgarro Vindication – allow all 4 factions to be played at once. Faction starting positions are marked on the map preview image. Team numbers are irrelevant for this game mode but it’s ideal for all players to be on Team 1.

Some balance changes to note…
Fighters and bombers are a lot more vulnerable to larger ship weapons. No more bouncing capital ship turbolasers off your fighters for little damage. In vanilla EaW/FoC most ship ion cannons were worse than laser cannons! Ion cannons are now much more effective against shielding. Starbases will require a significant attack force to take down at higher levels – plan your attacks wisely. Unit capacity has been increased to 60 and space unit population values have also been reworked.

[Land Skirmish]
Like space skirmish, land skirmish is also split into 2 primary gamemodes with the default maps playing similarly to vanilla FoC. [FCU] land maps allow players to build their base structures wherever they want via the new "Facility Construction Unit" – an MDU clone of sorts. Each tech level (there are 4 total now) grants access to the next tier FCU. Structures in FCU land mode have a maintenance cost associated with them to prevent spamming. The cost is listed in the description of each building so read carefully before constructing. Most structures can also garrison units! If a building is blocking a crucial path, you can either sell it or use it’s ability "Tactical Deconstruct" to destroy it. You may need to garrison 1 squad of infantry to enable the Tactical Deconstruct ability. Some structures (like shield generators) are limited to 1 per player as they are extremely powerful.

If you’re experiencing synchronization errors on game start, try disabling starting units!

[Galactic Conquest]
The galactic planet layout has been changed to follow the well known star wars galaxy maps. Several galactic conquest scenarios have been remade with the new planet layout. Planetary income is now dynamic and will change every 1.5 galactic days (like Nal Hutta and Atzerri in vanilla). Ground structures now have maintenance costs similar to FCU land mode – production buildings are relatively cheap but heavy defenses like turbolaser towers are expensive. All planets also have access to level 5 starbases. Nine new planets have also been added bringing the current total to 64. This means up to 64 planet galactic conquests that can also be played in multiplayer!

For those who enjoyed the original Empire and Rebel story campaigns, they have been re-added with a few updates to the GC menu as well (though we are working out a couple of bugs that have popped up, these are for the most part fully playable.)

[AI Changes]
AI difficulty modifiers have been for the most part increased across the board. Easy – Medium – Hard have been renamed to Balanced – Hard – Extreme. Balanced AI have no modifiers at all. Their units will perform the same as if you were fighting another player. This AI uses the vanilla game’s "Easy" AI script functions and will generally be a bit more passive (and easier to fight) than the vanilla game’s Normal AI. I recommend playing against Balanced AI if you are new to the game or the mod. To differentiate from vanilla, Hard and Extreme AI now have unique difficulty modifiers based on faction. For example the Empire AI scales highly in damage but gains minimal defense bonuses.

For easier AI, see the files included in the "Alternate Files" folder of the mod directory.

[Some other things]
The original goal of SoaFE was to provide a unique and stable playing experience that wouldn’t kill your PC in the process. While I’ve updated the textures of the space skydomes, don’t expect super HD textures on all the models and little turrets on all the units. Even with that said, we, like every other mod out there, are limited by this game’s very old and outdated engine. Playing with many AI or with many units (especially fighter swarms) will still cause slowdowns and lag and there’s not much more we can do to fix it.

At this time, I’m not planning on adding any new units or factions to the game. More FCU land maps, [Tournament] space maps, and maybe a few new galactic conquest maps will be added in the future at my leisure.

I hope you enjoy the 12 years of work I’ve put into SoaFE and if not, I respect that. This mod certainly isn’t for everybody.

If you are seeing many [MISSING] text and tooltips please make sure your game language is set to english! In your steam library, right click on "Star Wars Empire at War Gold Pack" then click on "Properties". In the box that pops up, go to the "Language" tab and select English from the dropdown menu.

As of version 3.0, SoaFE is no longer compatible with the disk, GoG, and other non-steam versions of the game.
