Разработка LAV-AD началась в 1987 году после подписания контракта с компаниями FMC Corporation и General Electric на разработку зенитной версии бронетранспортёра LAV-25 для морской пехоты США.
LAV-AD (Air Defense) is an anti—aircraft missile and cannon system designed to combat aircraft and helicopters, as well as ground targets. The development of the LAV-AD began in 1987 after signing a contract with FMC Corporation and General Electric to develop an anti-aircraft version of the LAV-25 armored personnel carrier for the US Marine Corps.
