It’s a mid-late game Hover Miner. Stop! Don’t run away, hear me out! So while both SV and HV can use laser drills, the ones on HVs are actually a lot stronger. Like, 3-4 times as strong. This opens up a niche for a late game Mining HV, to mine out large and very large deposits. Here the time to deploy it (and the much more difficult usage) is offset by its increased drill performance.

I did test it extensively on a midnight planet (4.1g) and can also supply some lessons learned, in case you want to give it a try:

  • Use the drill mode, activate by pressing ‘Left Shift’ + ‘o’
-The drill mode will break as soon as you are more than ca. 5.5-6m off the ground.
-It may also break if you look up or down too much or on uneven terrain 🙁
-Deactivate the mode to turn around or maneuver into new positions. No need to be slow all the time.
-Its a major PITA, but the only saving grace in high g, on the times it works
  • Mine deposits from the top down. The drill range is very limited and you may find yourself unable to mine stuff too far above you
  • Take a flat approach. If something is too far above or below you, don’t try to mine directly towards it. Instead mine a turning ramp through the surrounding material to get to the appropriate height
-I cannot emphasise this enough. Do try to keep your up/down aiming angles as flat as possible, max. 30-40 degrees worked out for me. The cockpit display with the angle numbers does help a lot here.
-Be mindful of the wonkyness of the drill mode. Try actively to produce a flat area to mine from.
  • If you have the option, use a SV instead of this for node-type deposits. The big distance between the drills mean you can only hit nodes with a low amount of drills (1-3), which causes abysmal performance when mining node-type deposits.
  • When on high g, be aware you will not be able to take steep angles when loaded. A Carry vehicle within wifi range can help with this, the drill mode can also help as it seems to be largely unaffected by weight.
  • If you mess up and end up in a trench on your side: hold ‘o’ and mine forward. That will usually save the day.

So in conclusion I dare say this HV can be a lot faster on mining big deposits than a SV (I’ve seen single-ticks of 1.8k+ on iron deposits). BUT (and this is a big BUT) It is very, very clunky at times and takes a lot of practice to master. Consider it a challenge.
