Description:

71-431R “Dostoevsky” (formerly “Kolomna”) is a three-section tram car developed by Uraltransmash for St. Petersburg. In September 2023, a prototype arrived in St. Petersburg at tram depot No. 3 for testing.
The main task that was solved when designing the car was to ensure the possibility of movement in curves with a radius of 14 meters. By adapting existing three-section models, it was possible to reduce the middle section, but it would not be possible to maintain a length of 28 meters, allowing for accommodation of 200 people with five people per square meter and 300 with eight. At the stage of pre-design preparations, manufacturers voiced a proposal to use single-section cars, but this would significantly reduce the capacity, and when coupling two cars using a system of many units, the tram would not be able to fit into the required dimensions where this is possible for a three-section car, for example, on Lenin Square. Also, a single-section that fits into 14 meters would very likely not comply with other GOST standards – in terms of the length or width of the opening, or it would be necessary to use wheels of a smaller radius, which would increase the wear rate. As a result, the middle section was enlarged, the joints were moved – this made it possible to change the turning angles in curves. The tram has decorative elements reminiscent of the high-floor tram LM-57 previously used in Leningrad, but is not a replica. For the three-section double-sided carriage, the name “Dostoevsky” (formerly “Kolomna”) was chosen (for the two-section version – “Dovlatov” (formerly “Petrogradka”)).
The salon contains an interactive screen window and a section for distributing printed publications.
