Improved Hoplite Phalanx Formation Mod
NOTE: compatible with other mods
This mod makes the ‘Hoplite Phalanx’ ability more organised/usable in combat and better looking (with improved animations). Phalanx mode doesn’t break during combat, and the unit can also run/walk in phalanx mode. IMO this is the best and closest implementation of the ‘hoplite phalanx’ possible for this game with modding.
[Gameplay Changes]: Improved the Hoplite Phalanx ability. With this ability ON, hoplites will now hold an organised formation during combat. The ability stays ON during combat, walking and running. Combat effectiveness is balanced
[Animation Changes]: In combat with Hoplite Phalanx ON, hoplites at the rear ranks will hold their spears vertically. Hoplites at the front ranks will hold their spears in a combat stance.
Balance:
Combat effectiveness has been tested in game and it’s balanced. The stat bonuses (eg melee defence…) are the same as the original game. However, Phalanx will now make hoplites stay in formation (wont wonder off in combat or engage out of formation). Phalanx is effective to hold out against larger hordes of enemies since an organised, tight formation will mostly funnel combat to the front row. Historically, these were the strengths of the phalanx.
Dont use hoplite phalanx against pikemen phalanx… think about it, it’s not logical…
Tactics/pro tips:
You can order your hoplties to charge, and then immediatley turn "hoplite phalanx" ON during combat. The unit will smoothly transition this way. I noticed that for "phalanx" on "phalanx" action, the hoplite unit which flanks the other gets an advantage. This was realistically a vulnarability of the phalanx.

1. Can now form/reform phalanx during combat. You can charge (outside of phalanx) and then form it in combat.
DEI compatability:
Well DEI’s hoplite units use "killing_spree" ability as a placeholder for the hoplite phalanx instead of the normal "hoplite_phalanx" ability. Thus, this mod won’t effect DEI hoplites. I have no idea why DEI does that.
