After World War II, Berlin was divided into four occupation zones, with the Soviet-occupied zone including East Berlin forming the German Democratic Republic (i.e. East Germany), and the American-British-French-occupied zones forming the Federal Republic of Germany (i.e. West Germany). With the intensification of the Cold War, East Germany encircled the border of West Berlin in 1961 and built a concrete wall with barbed wire (the so-called”Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart“) to prevent people from fleeing to the West. In 1962 the Schießbefehl came into force, allowing East German border guards to shoot illegal border crossers. The Berlin Wall is seen as a symbol of the iron curtain that divided Eastern and Western Europe after World War II. However, even the tallest wall could not stop the minds of the people and the spread of music. Concerts by Western artists stirred the minds of young East Germans, and rock music became a symbol of rebellion and freedom. in 1989, political changes in East Germany and a small misinterpretation of the rules brought thousands of Germans out into the streets to bring down the Berlin Wall. Eleven months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Germany was reunited.
