Abe Shinzo was born into a political family in Tokyo. His grandfather, Abe Kan, was a member of the House of Representatives, and his father, Abe Shintaro, once served as foreign minister. Furthermore, his maternal grandfather Kishi Nobusuke, and his maternal uncle Sato Eisaku all served as prime ministers. In Japan, a country with clan politics, such a prominent background means that he is destined to become the leader of the country.
As an important figure in Japan’s modern political history, Abe Shinzo has served as Japan’s prime minister for the longest time in history. He first became prime minister in 2006, but resigned in 2007 due to health problems and political challenges. In 2012, Abe Shinzo became prime minister again and served as PM until 2020.
Abe Shinzo is best known for his "Abenomics", a set of policies aimed at stimulating long-stagnant economy of Japan, including large-scale monetary easing, fiscal stimulus and structural reforms. As Prime Minister, Abe Shinzo actively promotes international status of Japan, strengthens relations with Western countries, especially the United States, and is committed to improving defense capabilities of Japan and responding to regional security challenges. Abe is known for his conservative political stance, particularly on national security and historical issues. He also actively promoted the revision of the pacifist constitution, striving to expand the role and capabilities of the Japan Self-Defense Forces. Under his rule, Japan shifted from the "Yoshida Doctrine" to the "Abe Doctrine", and military spending was increased to 2% of GDP. This naturally aroused security concerns among neighboring countries, especially those countries once invaded by Japan – China, two Koreas, Russia…
In 2022, Abe Shinzo was assassinated in Nara. He became the second Japanese Prime Minister after Yoshida Shigeru to receive the honor of a state funeral. His legacy is complicated. His supporters praise his achievements in economic reform and foreign policy, while critics note that his policies have sometimes caused controversy at home and abroad. What is more, scandals like cherry blossom scandal and Moritomo Gakuen scandal also hurt his reputation. In any case, Abe Shinzo undoubtedly had a profound impact on Japanese politics and economy in the early 21st century.
