Pagoda of Fogong Temple (World Wonder)
– Liang Sicheng
The Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple is the oldest extant wooden building in China, dating back to the Khitan-led Liao Dynasty in 1056. Also known as the Wooden Pagoda of Ying County, this pagoda was completely built of lumber interlocked with mortise and tenon joints without using a single nail. The pagoda showed five stories in its exteriors, but actually contained nine stories reinforced with bracket arms (known as dougong in Chinese). The pagoda stored a number of Buddhist statues, scrolls (either handwritten or printed with movable types) and relics, including two teeth of Buddha. With its delicately-designed structure, the Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple has withstood many natural disasters (notably earthquakes). It is seen as a classical example of Chinese wooden buildings, and provides insights to the study of the history of Chinese architecture.
