Originally occupied by the Awori tribe of the Yoruba people, the site of Lagos is made up of a set of islands in a sheltered lagoon in the Atlantic Ocean, on the edge of the Gulf of Benin. His first name was Eko. Portuguese explorer Rui de Sequeira visited the region in 1472. He named the area Lac de Curamo; from there comes the current name of the city because, the Portuguese word for lake is lago. Another explanation for the origin of the city’s name is that it was given in reference to Lagos, the maritime city that was at the time the main port of departure for Portuguese expeditions along the African coast. Conquered by the Kingdom of Benin in the 15th or 16th century, Lagos was ruled by kings and became a major center of the slave trade during the 18th century. In 1861, the British made it a colony and named it the capital of the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria established in 1914. It remained the capital when Nigeria gained independence in 1960.Compatible with Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm, NewFrontier.
