Description:
"This canal was blamed for the Sui Dynasty’s fall.
But on its waves goods are transported to all.
If there had not been the dragon boat parade,
Its builder could have been compared to Yu the Great."
– Pi Rixiu

The Grand Canal, stretching across the plains of eastern China, is the longest artificial inland waterway in the world. The Grand Canal is not a single channel built overnight, but a network of waterways constructed and maintained throughout the dynasties, dating as far back as 484 BC, as the Han Canal connected the Huai River and the Si River. During the Sui Dynasty, both Emperor Wen and Emperor Yang dedicated to the construction of a number of canals centering on Luoyang, namely the Guangtong Canal, the Yongji Canal, the Tongji Canal, the Shanyang Canal, and the Jiangnan Canal. Their efforts established a network of waterways stretching from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south. However, during the reign of Emperor Yang, the excessive forced labor caused public discontent, which became the trigger for the demise of the Sui Dynasty. During the Yuan Dynasty, Kublai Khan chose Dadu (present-day Beijing) as his capital city and built canals such as the Jizhou Canal, Huitong Canal and Tonghui Canal, allowing grain ships from Hangzhou in the south to reach the capital city without having to detour to Luoyang. The Grand Canal hydraulic project formed the major inland route of transportation of logistics in China, and the rise and fall of dynasties were correlated with the construction, dredging and management of the canals.

Grand Canal

Upon completion 1 or 2 adjacent Canal districts are automatically constructed. The Canal wonder tile can now be crossed by naval units. Trade Routes traveling through it can multiply the Gold they get from districts at their destination. Must be built on a flat land tile where there are two adjacent tiles directly across the build tile from one another that meet the following criteria: one adjacent tile must be able to legally hold a Canal district connecting into the Grand Canal construction tile; the other must be either a city, a water tile, or be another tile that can hold a connecting Canal. Civilization with the first Grand Canal unlocks the Canal district, and may build additional Grand Canals in other cities (one per city). Each Grand Canal provides +2 Trade Route capacity and 2 Traders. Unlocked at the Engineering technology.

Supports English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Japanese.

Notes
  • It is strongly recommended to use Leugi’s Suez Canal Wonder (which this mod is based on) alongside this mod, both for adding more canal wonders and reworks for Panama Canal.
  • Some graphics glitches may exist, like the water material and the connection of canal wonders and city centers. Loading saved games may cause disconnection of canals.
  • Known issue: Completing a Grand Canal would cause all other Grand Canals under production get canceled, due to hard-coded wonder mechanics. The same issue can be observed in other mods that allows multiple wonders of the same type.

Credits
This mod is based on Leugi’s canal wonder tutorial and assets.
Special thanks to IthildinX for importing and adjusting the canal model,
and Mikecro for preparing the building model.
