Göbekli Tepe · World Wonder
The Göbekli Tepe is a Neolithic site – possibly the oldest religious site in the world. It is located on the outskirts of the city of Şanlıurfa, Turkey (“Göbekli” comes from the Turkish word for “potbelly”), only discovered in the 1960s. The Göbekli Tepe consists of numerous monolithic pillars standing in stone circles, featuring motifs in the images of animals and gods. The site bears witnessed how humankind came out of the last Ice Age to build tools out of stone and flint, forming early civilizations and religious cults.
“I think here we are face to face with the earliest representation of gods. They have no eyes, no mouths, no faces. But they have arms and they have hands. They are makers.”– Klaus Schmidt
