Description:

Due to the increasing number of passengers and aging of the vehicles, the BVG started to plan on purchasing their newest generation of vehicles for the subway’s small and large profile network in October 2016. A total of up to 440 wagons should be purchased for Type Jk and up to 1060 for Type J.

In an initial call, the BVG ordered 376 cars from Stadler. The railways are currently manufactured by Stadler Pankow and are delivered since late 2023. Originally 12 cars from each series were scheduled to be delivered in autumn of 2022 for extensive testing, but due to Corona consequences there’s still no concrete schedule at the end of 2023. Series delivery should start in early 2024.

One train of the series consists of up to six cars, which are designed to form two-, four- or six-car trains. The planned 236 cars of the J series will be delivered as 52 two-car and 33 four-car trains. As many components as possible are of the same type as the JK series in order to keep the cost of spare parts as low as possible.
