Gempei Overhaul
I’ve had gripes with this campaign for a long time and decided to finally put in the time to attempt to fix it without giving up its general feeling.
RotS’ biggest issues and how to fix them in my opinion are as follows:
1. The AI will almost never upgrade towns, which seems to be the case because there are no outright benefits aside from building slots attached to it. Tried to remedy this by giving the castle a bunch of economic effects which atleast seems to cause it to upgrade them sometimes if money is available.
2. In an age that was all about cavalry warfare no one builds mounted troops, because the building for it is plain worse to the AI than the one that provides more food. Took away the choice to create pastures, moved the cavalry requirement to the basic farms and added a lower tier cavalry that is available at lv2 farms. This allows the AI to actually create some cavalry for its armies.
3. Despite food being plentiful there is little incentive to actually upgrade settlements, so many buildings had economic effects added to them. Also allows larger AI nations to be a more serious threat later in the campaign.
Unit changes:
– removed foot samurai
– increased levy units’ defense by 1 and morale by 2, made garrison levies the same as recruitable ones, why is there even a stat difference there?
– increased attendant attack by 1, morale and defense by 2, 20 more men per regiment
– moved mounted naginata and samurai to their respective tier 2 barracks
– added a weaker version of mounted Samurai that is available at lv2 farms
– firebomb throwers unit size tripled, attack, defense, and armor increased to 4, charge bonus up to 5
– monk unit size increased by 20 men
– Cavalry unit size increased by 20 men
Building Changes:
– removed pastures, lv2 of dry field agriculture chain now grants access to horses, aready built pastures can upgrade into the same tier of farmlands (should also make the minamoto lands a little less poor)
– buddhist building chain provides 5% tax rate per level, happiness bonus doubled
– tadokoro can only upgrade into town watch, gives 1 experience level to levies per level
– clan estate chain gives 50 gold per level
– castles now increase growth by 2, tax by 5%, income by 100, replenishment and recruitment slots with each level
– renamed agriculture and garrison building chains and added some description to make it more accurate to the era it is set in
– roads now cost 1000 > 1800 > 2600 to upgrade
AI:
-Taira Clans are now incentivised to upgrade towns and to construct buddhist buildings, in theory that should allow them to field warrior monks
-Minamoto Clans are now incentivised to upgrade the castle build chain
-Minor clans (for some reason this includes the Fujiwara) are now incentivised to upgrade towns and unlikely to build schools
Misc Changes:
– Iron Manufacturing renamed to Abolition of Land Restrictions, Plough and Oxen renamed to Feudal Obligations
– Added unit card for Mounted Bushi (thanks Qirn!)
TODO:
Adding a couple more units that fit the time period. I’m open to suggestions in this regard, would also very much appreciate it if another modder has a nagamaki model I could add to the game.
