Strudeler’s Civilizations: Novgorod
Play as the great knight and prince of Rus’, Alexander Nevsky; in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.
Novgorod was one of the great Russian cities that rose to prominence after the southern Rus’ had fallen to Mongols. Novgorod developed a particular Russian dialect during the medieval era, one that became extinct under Muscovy and Russia. Novgorod was also a noble republic that elected a Rurikid prince from a neighbouring Russian Principality whenever the need arose. Novgorod was a very effective republic as it balanced city powers with warlike boyars and a powerful clergy. Novgorod was very effective at protecting Russians and Finno-Ugric peoples (that were not yet Christian) from the Germanic crusaders of the Baltic. Alexander Nevsky is among the most beloved of medieval knights and Russian saints, he led Novgorod against the Baltic crusaders while also submitting to Mongol or Tartar tribute demands.

- Trait – Face of Joseph; Strength of Samson; Wisdom of Solomon: Holy Site and Lavra gain minor adjacency from Tundra and Snow tiles. Commercial Hubs and Harbours gain standard adjacency from Tundra and Snow tiles. Units on Tundra or Snow tiles gain +5 Combat Strength. Gain the Druzhyna unique unit.
- Agenda – Prince of Novgorod, Vladimir, and Kiev: Likes to liberate cities. Likes civilizations that liberate cities. Does not like civilizations that occupy cities.
LEADER UNIT: DRUZHYNA
- Novgorodian and Russian unique land Melee class unit that replaces the Man-at-Arms when Alexander Nevsky is the leader. Requires Iron to produce and Horses maintenance. +1 Movement when starting the turn on flat terrain. Adjacent Heavy Cavalry, Light Cavalry, and Ranged Cavalry class units as well as Druzhyna gain +5 Combat Strength. Does not have any advantage or disadvantage against Anti-Cavalry units.
CIVILIZATION: NOVGOROD
- Trait – Chronicle of Novgorod: +20% Production towards the Commercial Hub, Harbour, and their buildings. Market and Lighthouse gain 1 Great Work slot that can hold anything.
- Spawn Bias – Furs (Tier 1), Horses/Deer/Forest/Marsh/Tundra/Tundra Hills (Tier 3), Rivers (Tier 5).
CIVILIZATION UNIT: USHKUYNIKS
- Novgorodian unique Recon class unit that replaces the Skirmisher. Available at Shipbuilding. Costs 1 Movement to embark, disembark, cross rivers, or pillage. +1 Movement when starting the turn adjacent to a river.
CIVILIZATION BUILDING: BIRCH BARK PRINTER
- A building unique to Novgorod that replaces the Bank. Available at Guilds. +5 Gold. +1 Trade Route capacity if the city has a Harbour. Woods and Rainforest in the city’s border gain +1 Gold.
