Chauchat light machine gun was the standard light machine gun adopted by the French army during the First World War, and it was also one of the first weapons specially designed for individual carrying and shooting.Over 250,000 were made during the war, making it the largest automatic weapon made in WWI. Its name comes from Captain Louis Chauchat, the chief designer of the light machine gun.
The origins of the Chauchat light machine gun can be traced back to 1903, when Louis Chauchat and Charles Sutter of APX(Ateliers de Puteaux) began developing a lightweight weapon that could be operated by a single soldier and fire the standard Lebel 8mm ammunition. Over the next few years, they developed several models for the C-S machine gun. These prototypes were similar to the later Chauchat light machine gun, but with the curved magazine mounted on top of the receiver. After several successful trials in January 1913, the French Army ordered 100 C-S machine guns, but the order was not completed until after the war. As the C-S was one of the lightest automatic weapons of its time, the machine guns were fitted to French aircraft in the first part of the First World War, and no trace of them can be found to this day.
It was not long before General Joffre requested a lightweight automatic support weapon for the infantry. As the C-S machine gun had already been designed and tested, and could also fire the standard Lebel cartridge, it was eventually decided to use it as the basis for the new weapon design in order to simplify logistical management. It was expected that the C-S could be manufactured in large numbers at low cost in converted civilian plants, so the responsibility for mass production of the Chauchat light machine gun fell to the former bicycle factory Gladiator. Chauchat and Sutter soon refined the previous design, which was adopted by the French military in 1915 and issued to the front in 1916.
